Back in February 23’ my wife and I spent a weekend with some dear friends at their house in La Quinta California. One morning I noticed and photographed the wonderful light on the hills/mountain as viewed from their kitchen window. I asked my friend the name of the mountain to which she replied “oh, that’s our mountain”. I was amused and decided that I would create a painting of the mountain as a gift.
My friends are fairly new empty nesters, semi retired, and outdoor enthusiasts. I decided to make them and their dog a part of the painting. A simple metaphor, a painting with them begining their journey into their future at daybreak. The mountains, the future with sunlite and shadows, being somewhat puzzling, and not always completely making sense. A confident and prepared couple more than ready to take on any challenge that comes along.

Sedona Afternoon was inspired by the soft late afternoon light on the Red Rock canyon views to the southeast of the Sedona high school. A brief summer rain had just passed through the area. During the storm I packed up my dogs and some snacks for a short drive to a favorite viewing spot near the school. As the storm cleared the sun reappeared and we were rewarded with a wonderful scattered cloud sky and the vibrant colors of the bright rocks and plants. Definitely one of those life is good moments. Originally I had planned to paint a peaceful pleasant landscape. However, as I sketched and painted I realized that I was drawn to the scene by the intense feel good Red Rock energy that Sedona is known for. I love the natural energy of moments like this and have done my best to capture the intensity of it here.
